Why I'm an Atheist

No one has to take my word for it. This site walks through the biggest questions one step at a time, with diagrams you can spin, experiments you can try yourself, and a source for every key claim. The few that still need a second source are flagged.

First, what does "atheist" mean?

The short answer

An atheist is someone who does not believe any god exists. That's it. It is not a religion, it has no holy book, and it doesn't claim to know everything.

Three words get mixed up all the time:

WordWhat it answersPlain meaning
AtheistDo you believe in a god?No. I'm not convinced any god exists.
AgnosticCan it be known? Not sure it can be known. (You can be both: an agnostic atheist.)
TheistDo you believe in a god?Yes.

Most atheists are in the "I'm not convinced" camp, not the "I can prove there's no god" camp. This site is built the same way: it shows why the evidence doesn't convince, and it tells you honestly where science still has open questions.1

28%
of U.S. adults are "nones": atheist, agnostic, or "nothing in particular" (Pew, 2024)
83%
of nones say wanting to avoid hurting others is a key part of how they decide right from wrong
29%
of nones reject any higher power at all. Many "nones" still believe in something.

That last number matters. Being non-religious and being an atheist are not the same thing, and this site tries not to blur them.1

A promise

Every page includes the best reply from the other side, in terms believers would recognize. If an argument on this site can't survive its strongest opponent, it shouldn't be on the site.
